The Year of the (Wood) Dragon

The front of this 20-yuan polymer note from the People’s Republic of China is quite colorful, with orange, yellow, green, and red. A dragon is seen amongst the clouds. On the back are children performing the dragon dance with traditional lanterns. Dragon dances have been used to bring rain, pray against insect attacks on crops, and more. During festivals, they are meant to chase away evil spirits and welcome prosperous times. Dragon dances during New Year’s parades are often the highlight. On this bank note, it appears one child is holding the ‘Pearl of Wisdom’, a large ball on top of a pole that leads the dragon.
