A rare Norwegian speciedaler struck for Christian V in 1675 (PG) and graded PCGS AU-53 was the top lot in a June sale by Spink, bringing $27,700 on its $16,000-18,000 estimate.

Prices realized at Spink’s N.Y. Collectors’ Sale June 19-20 exceeded their upper estimates by considerable amounts.

Top priced lot was a rare Norwegian speciedaler struck for Christian V in 1675 (PG), KM-132. Graded PCGS AU-53, it took $27,700 on its $16,000-18,000 estimate.

A little distance behind came a proof Austrian double thaler of Franz Joseph dated 1857A, KM-2246.1. The cataloger’s approval was clear: “immaculate surfaces and wonderful iridescent rose and blue toning.” Graded Choice Uncirculated, it went to the block with a modest $2,500-3,500 estimate to realize $18,500.

And then came China. Leading the charge here was an undated 1914 Republic dollar showing Yuan Shi-kai (the first President of the Republic) in military attire, Y-322. A well struck coin, it carried a PCGS MS-63 grading and soared to $11,025 on its highly conservative $2,500-3,500 estimate.
