The Falkland Islands are often described as the Penguin Capital of the world. Over a million of the birds nest on the islands. Recently, Pobjoy Mint released the first colorized 50-pence coin in a four-coin series celebrating the black-and white-critters.
The 27.30 mm, 8.00 g cupro-nickel coin features the tiny Rockhopper Penguin poised and ready to hop over a rock.
Rockhoppers are one of the smallest species of penguin in the world. They weigh no more than six pounds and are about 20 inches high. They are distinctive with red eyes, orange beak, pink webbed feet and the yellow and black spiky feathers on their head. They hop from one place to the next as they are unable to slide on their bellies like most penguins.
The three other coins in the series will be devoted to the Gentoo, King and Magellanic Penguins. Mintage of each coin is 7,500.
