New Issue: Recently Released Coins From Around the World

World Coin News explores the newest numismatic issues shining from mints across the globe.

Cook Islands

Power Coin’s new issue for the Cook Islands secures Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic “Salvator Mundi” painting in bubble wrap. Underneath the sheet of protective bubbles is the famous vision of Christ in Renaissance clothing, with one hand lifted and the other holding a crystal orb. But it seems someone has popped some of those bubbles, as Christ’s eye and raised hand show through the “wrapping.”

Croatia

Offered in gold or silver, the reverse of the third issue of the “Croatian Innovators” series (a collaboration between the Croatian National Bank and Croatian Mint) showcases the common writing tool, the mechanical pencil, to honor the work of Croatian inventor Slavoljub Penkala. The inventor of over 80 patents also gets a starring role on the coin’s face.

Kazakhstan

In honor of the 30th anniversary of the country’s constitution, the National Bank of Kazakhstan has released a commemorative coin in silver or bicolor (nickel-brass and cupronickel alloy). The reverse presents the constitution as an open book and includes a map of the country, a shanyrak, and the number 30. The values of the coins (100 and 1,000 tenge) are presented on the face.

Switzerland

The Federal Mint, Swissmint, has its head in the clouds for its newest coin series, “Pioneers of Swiss Aviation.” The first issue, a 20-franc silver coin, features a visual timeline of various hot-air balloons flying among the Swiss mountains Gummfluh, La Videmanette, and Rüeblihorn. Aviation history continues on the obverse with a propeller blade that evolves into modern technology as it spins.
