As the weather warms in the Northern Hemisphere, CIT has sought inspiration from a chilly icon for its spring collection. The Liechtenstein-based company is commemorating the 160th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn, a mountain in the Alps that towers at 14,692 feet on the border of Italy and Switzerland. The coin, made for Switzerland, comes in a 1-ounce silver, 38.61 millimeters proof version with a mintage of 1,865. An even rarer 1-kilogram, 100-millimeter-proof gold edition is offered with only nine issues.

The famous peak literally stands out on the coin’s reverse, immortalized in an ultra-high 3.5-millimeter relief engraving created with CIT’s signature smartminting® technology. Surrounding the peak in the background is a topographic map of nearby communities.

Flip the coin over and revealed on the obverse is a visual story of this amazing feat that occurred on July 14, 1865. An engraved depiction of the six explorers and their leader, English mountaineer Edward Whymper, is shown. The text " Matterhorn " and the historic date are Overhead like a banner. Below the figures is a circular inset with the CHF denomination and “CONFŒDERATIO HELVETICA 2025.” Inscribed on the rim are Whymper’s thoughts about his team’s accomplishment, “At 1:40 PM the world was at our feet and the Matterhorn was conquered. Hurrah! Not a footstep could be seen.”
