Marvelous May Results from Chris Rudd

A strong showing at Chris Rudd’s May auction saw Celtic gold coins exceed expectations, with rare and artistic examples drawing spirited bidding ahead of July’s sale.

May was a marvelous month for Celtic coins at Chris Rudd’s auction in Norwich on 17 May. A relatively common but extremely fine imported coin of the Morini tribe, Boat Tree quarter stater, achieved £700, a beautiful North East Coast, Left Type gold stater of the Lincolnshire Corieltauvi tribe sold for £2,400, and an Eisu Tree gold stater, struck by the Dobunni of the West Midlands, sold for £2,600, over double the starting price.

The front cover coin, an extremely fine Duro Boat Gold, created a lot of interest amongst bidders, eventually achieving £1,000. The artistic creativity of this type clearly attracts attention.

Chris Rudd’s next all-Celtic auction will be held in Norwich on 19 July. Some of the stunning coins on offer will be a superb Norfolk Wolf gold stater, one of the earliest of the type struck and excessively rare, with only one other recorded with the same pair of dies. Also offered is a unique Wheel and Rosette silver unit. Although 2,000 years in the ground has taken its toll on the flan, it is in extremely fine condition, and all key elements of the fascinating design are sharply struck.  For a free catalog phone Sandra 01263 735 707 or email sandra@celticcoins.com
