Proof of the Month: August 2023

The proof of the face of this Series of 1875 legal tender note is particularly striking because it carries the underprint of the red tint, which includes the Treasury seal, two instances of medallions reading “Series A 1875” and a bold “D 500 D.” The Series of 1875 $500s were made with Allison-New and Allison-Wyman Treasury signatures, this being Allison-New, for which no issued notes are reported although 32,000 were printed.
