Rare Palestine offering
A rare 1929 50 pounds Palestine Currency Board note is featured in Gemini Numismatic Auctions sale No. XII, to be presented by Harlan J. Berk, Ltd., on Jan. 11 in New York. The sale is to being held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, 301 Park Ave., in conjunction with the 43rd Annual New York International Numismatic Convention.
Dated Sept. 30, 1929, the rarity, Pick 10b, is graded PMG VF 30 Net and is expected to bring $70,000. It is part of a collection of Israel and Palestine Mandate currency ranging from the 500 mils through the 50 pound note of 1929.
“These notes have never been offered before and are from the years of searching in the late 1960s and early 1970s by a dedicated collector who shared his enthusiasm with his children showing off the notes as he obtained them,” according to the catalog description. “Many were obtained through the aid of a friend, named Shasha, a dealer in Tel Aviv who got them directly from their source, who was a signer on many of the notes!”
Also featured are two Russian walrus-skin notes issued by the Russian American Co. in the period of 1816-1852 for use in Russian North America (present day Alaska). Included are a one ruble, walrus skin parchment Obv. “1” surrounded by ornamental designs, Pick UNL1a, PMG VF 25; and a five rubles walrus skin parchment, Pick UNL5b, Obv: 5 PYbAE surrounded by multiple designs, PMG AU50 Net.
