A ceremony marking the introduction of the Ellis Island quarter was held Aug. 30.
The event was attended by 350 persons, including 30 children, who took the ferry to what was once the island gateway for immigrants to America.
The ceremonial coin pour was done by Save Ellis Island, Inc. President Janis Calella, United States Mint Plant Senior Advisor Todd Baldau and Ellis Island Deputy Superintendent John Hnedak.
Baldau also presented Hnedak with a plaque that included Ellis Island quarters struck on the first day of production.
The children were each given an example of the new coin in its own special holder.
Adults in attendance were able to buy specimens of the new quarter by the roll for the $10 face value. They were minted in Philadelphia and provided by the Bank of America.
In this way, $18,500 worth of the new coins were taken by the public.

The Ellis Island quarter is the 39th release in the America the Beautiful series, which will continue to run until all 56 designs are issued. The last design will debut in early 2021.
