The Berlin-Baghdad Railway began construction in 1903 and finished in 1940. The German Empire was the primary source for the engineering, construction and also the funding through Deutsche Bank. Since the railway would have greatly benefited Germany in its’ colonial power, the entire project became the subject of political and military disputes and construction delays. This medal was struck to celebrate the completion of the Amanus Range tunnel which is the longest railway tunnel in Turkey. The interesting history makes this rare medal a bargain at its $700 estimate.

Sporting an attractive portrait of Peter II, much like that used on the circulating 20 Dinara of 1938, this bronze medal celebrating Peter’s first year of rule as the last King of Yugoslavia, succeeding his assassinated father in 1934 at the age of 11 years, is a great historical piece at a low estimate of just $70.

This is the final date of the Nurnberg KM73 goldgulden, which was struck 40 years after the previous date in this type. At XF, the estimate of about $5,000 is exceptionally reasonable, so be prepared for competition.

Having served as medical officer under Gordon in Khartoum, Emin Pascha was named Governor of Equatoria (modern day South Sudan) in 1878. One of the more enlightened Europeans involved in African exploration and study, Emin Pascha compiled many journals of flora and fauna and expanded European knowledge of the African regions in which he traveled. This medal is one of very few numismatic items I have ever seen produced in his honor.

No proof strikes are listed for this Prussian type in the old Standard Catalog of World Coins, but this example is considered to be a proof strike by the catalogers. In any case it is an outstanding example in a long date run of a popular circulating type and well worth active bidding.
