Berlin’s 2018 World Money Fair has gone into the history books. It was a great success with some 300 exhibitors from more than 50 countries. Thousands of collectors walked the floor looking for dedicated WMF releases. Just a few are shown here, all from the South Pacific.
The Royal Australian Mint had four items to offer. First up was a 2018 set of Australia’s current 5-cent to $2 coins. These came packaged with a distinctive WMF outer sleeve. They included a not-issued-for-circulation Armistice $1. Mintage was limited to 1,250 sets.
Then came a high-relief 32 mm, one- ounce .999 fine silver undenominated piece showing the original designs used on Australia’s discontinued two cents: Raphael Maklouf’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth and Stuart Devlin’s Frilled-necked Lizard. Mintage is 1,500. It, too, came in WMF marked packaging.
For the Year of the Dog, the RAM’s tetradecagonal 50 cents was available plated with 24 karat gold. Mintage is 5,000.
And last but by no means least, 5,000 of Australia’s aluminum-bronze dollars had been privy-marked with the Brandenburg Gate.
The Perth Mint delivered a 40.60 mm, 31.107 g (one ounce) .9999 fine silver, partially colored $1. The reverse shows this year’s Kookaburra design by Neil Hollis. Mintage is 1,500 and like other mint products described here, the coin was delivered in 2018 World Money Fair packaging.
If size matters in numismatics, Niue led the field, courtesy of Downies, with a 65 mm, five-ounce.999 fine silver $10 celebrating the Great Barrier Reef. The reverse is selectively gold plated. Mintage is 500.
Unless sold out at Berlin, all products were available from their respective online mint shops or from Downies: www.downies.com/.
