Scorching results from Norwich
Celtic coins sizzle at Chris Rudd July auction with red-hot results!
It wasn’t just the weather that was scorching in July; Chris Rudd's latest selection of all-Celtic coins at auction had some red-hot results.
The magnificent gold stater, which adorned the front cover like the glorious golden sun, was fiercely fought over and finally achieved £4,800. This is not surprising because the type, Tincomarus Native Warrior ComF/Tinco, is rarely seen in such good condition; indeed, it is arguably the finest known of the five examples recorded.
An unusual Nipples cast potin unit with clear ‘freckles’ went for £750. David Holman, the expert on the flat linear potins of the Cantiaci tribe, described the type as ‘fascinating’ and, with only three other examples recorded – all over 30 years ago – one wonders if the sun brought the freckles out!
Finally, a very pretty Tasciovanos Eagle Griffin silver unit in near extremely fine condition sold for £1600, double the starting price. All in all, it was another successful auction, once again showing that the market in Celtic coins is still strong across all metals.
Elizabeth Cottam, director of Chris Rudd Ltd, took the opportunity to mention a fabulous Snake Head silver unit of an East Wiltshire tribe, which is being offered in their forthcoming September auction, due to be held in Norwich on Sunday, 14 September 2025. She explains the coin shows wheat-ears growing from the head of the moon-faced deity, which also has a sunburst for a chin, and it is thought may well be meant to signal political alignment, while invoking a celestial gift of sunshine for the harvest. It seems to have done its job if the heatwave continues.
