Chris Rudd’s 200th Edition Dazzles
A dazzling display of ancient British Celtic coins were offered at auction in Chris Rudd’s 200th edition catalogue held in Norwich, 18th May.
A dazzling display of ancient British Celtic coins was offered at auction in Chris Rudd’s 200th edition catalog, held in Norwich on 18 May.
Silver coins once again proved popular, like the excessively rare Cunobelinus Bitch and Snake silver unit, which featured as their front cover coin. It was struck by the Catuvellauni & Trinovantes c.AD 8-41, it was found by a metal detectorist near Chelmsford, Essex, on 13 October 2024. Graded extremely fine, it was fiercely fought over and eventually sold for £2800.
An extremely rare Dubnovellaunos Rochester Pegasus silver unit, struck by the Cantiaci c.25 BC-AD 5, went for £1100. The Cantiaci centered on the Weald and were divided by the rivers Stour, ‘strong,’ Medway ‘like mead,’ and Darwent, ‘where oaks grow’ – all ancient British names - and many of their coins feature fishing nets.
Elizabeth Cottam, director of Chris Rudd Ltd, was delighted with the auction and the response to the 200th edition of the catalog. “I think when Chris started cutting and sticking coin photographs onto an A4 page, photocopying it, and mailing it out to eager collectors he had no idea that nearly 35 years later there would still be such an interest in the coins, in fact, I think at that point he wondered whether there would be an interest 35 days later. Celtic coins really were the underdogs of the ancient coin world back then, with many dealers seizing the opportunity to clear their stock onto the ‘newbie’. But thank goodness they did.”
The next all-Celtic Chris Rudd auction will be held in Norwich on Sunday, 20 July 2025.
