Collectors nabbed 134,925 of the 2016-W uncirculated American Eagle by Dec. 4.

First day of sales on Dec. 1 accounted for nearly all of this total. Eager purchasers took 126,902.

The coin with the “W” mintmark on the reverse was created in order for the Mint to sell the popular coin directly to collectors in uncirculated condition.

Standard silver American Eagle bullion coins can only be sold to the Mint’s Authorized Purchasers. These have no mintmark on them even though they also are struck at West Point, N.Y.
