Join an error club for fun, education

Readers of my articles may notice that at the end of each article I recommend memberships in the Combined Organizations of Numismatic Error Collectors of America and the National Collectors Association of Die Doubling.

CONECA is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. Its focus is on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers – just to name a few.

CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly, and it offers a very dynamic website. In recent years the website has offered news stories on member finds, auction results, educational stories, research, etc., some of which are found nowhere else. The same is true of the Errorscope.

In past several years, CONECA has expanded its website to include an Error-Variety Coin Forum where folks can ask questions, give answers, share opinions or theory in addition to sharing images. It also boasts a members-only area for the website with a large bank of back issues of CONECA’s Errorscope – you could spend days or weeks just on this page alone!

CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

Annual dues to CONECA are $25 a year for adults and $7.50 a year for Young Numismatists (under 18). Add $12.50 additional for first-class mailing if preferred. Dues for membership outside of the U.S. are $37.50. Dues may be mailed in to the Membership Coordinator, Rachel Irish, 101 W. Prairie #323, Hayden, ID 83835 or by email at MRirish5@roadrunner.com. You can also join by using PayPal from then Join/Renew page on the website accessible from www.conecaonline.org. A printable membership application, while not necessary, may also be accessed from the website. All checks should be made out to CONECA.

Another club that I recommend is the National Collectors Association of Die Doubling. NCADD’s focus is primarily restricted to doubled dies, repunching and overdates. It also publishes a journal, The Hub, six times a year. In addition to the journal, the club offers coin attribution services. Annual membership is $30 a year for Adults and $12 a year for YN’s (under 18). Add $15 if first-class mailing is desired. Canadian residents add $20 per year for mailing; other countries contact John Bordner for the exact rates.
