Do you think Christmas demand pushes up collector coin prices?
Here are some answers sent from our e-newsletter readers to Editor Dave Harper.
Yes, as in most retail settings, holding firm on most prices are common. I had been in a number of aspects (pharmacy, big box, restaurants), all of which hold “premium” items from sale. Yes, if it hasn’t moved, sales can be had, but not necessarily.
Happy Holidays to all! May the new year bring financial wonders to all.

Your question brings up one interesting thought. I’ve been sitting here thinking about it a lot. I think that giving a coin at this time of year could raise the price of that coin. However, I would think that most collectors would know this and, therefore, not fall into the trap. I can’t say the same for an inexperienced person who thinks it would be a great gift for their son or daughter.

I have not seen price increases around Christmas. I could see it on silver rounds and hobby-related items, current year mint sets, silver and gold. There is an old adage that applies: “There is no Santa Claus in the coin business.” Quality original coins with attractive patina do not come cheap. Likewise, key dates are not discounted unless there is a noticeable problem. As always, knowledge is king. When purchasing numismatic items for last-minute gifts locally, paying extra for convenience is a good thing. It supports the hobby and small businesses.

No. Actually the prices should lower around Christmas to induce new collectors.
