The American Innovation series heads to Wisconsin, honoring the Cray-1 supercomputer and its groundbreaking role in modern computing.


The U.S. Mint’s American Innovation series continues on April 7 with the newest edition honoring Wisconsin and the Cary-1 supercomputer. The design shows an aerial view of the computer.
The Cray-1 was introduced in 1975 by Seymour Cray. The supercomputer was the first to successfully implement the vector processor design. This system vastly improved the ability to perform math operations. The first Cray-1 system was installed at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1976.
