Smithsonian acquires BCA coin trio
On March 19, three coins from the Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin Program were added to the Smithsonian’s National Philanthropy Collection, including the first ever pink-hued gold coin. In addition to the $5 gold coin by the U.S. Mint, the donation also included a silver dollar and a half dollar coin. While they are no longer available, each piece purchased carried a surcharge that went to the BCRF to further breast cancer research. The cumulative sales figures from Jan. 27, according to the U.S. Mint, are: 12,526 silver uncirculated, 34,542 silver proof, 4,477 gold uncirculated, 10,386 gold proof, 11,301 clad uncirculated, and 17,937 clad proofs. The three coins are now available for public view as part of the updated “Giving in America” exhibit.
