On March 21 Danmarks Nationalbank announced that the Mint of Finland has begun production of Danish coins.
Some years back the falling demand for new coin and bank note issues led the Danish government to conclude it could no longer justify the continued production of the country’s bank notes and coins at Danmarks Nationalbank. A tender process for production of new Danish coins was initiated in December 2015. Subsequently a four-year contract was signed with the Mint of Finland.
“We chose the Mint of Finland after a transparent tender process and we are convinced that they will be able to meet our expectations,” said Governor Hugo Frey Jensen of Danmarks Nationalbank. It was Jensen who pressed the button to start production of Danish 20 kroner coins earlier this year during a visit to the Mint of Finland in the southern Finnish city of Vantaa.
These and other denominations struck in Finland will go into circulation in Denmark later this year. There will be no changes in the appearance of any Danish coins as a result of their being struck in Finland.
A new supplier of Danish bank notes is expected to be announced in early 2018.
