Canada issues cupped coin
The Royal Canadian Mint has celebrated the 140th anniversary of The Library of Parliament in Ottawa with its first ever concave coin struck in ultra-high relief antiqued silver.

The coin is a 36.07 mm, 30.75 g .9999 fine silver $25 proof. The designer has used the ultra-high relief of the coin’s reverse to depict the Library’s neo-gothic domed ceiling and surrounding architecture in exquisite detail.
The $25 coin is also the first from Canada to show a convex effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse side, in this case that of Susanna Blunt. Mintage is 6,000.
The coin was unveiled to assembled Senators, Members of Parliament, and special guests in the Library of Parliament on Jan. 28. Canada’s Minister of Finance, Bill Morneau, observed, “For 140 years, the Library of Parliament has been a vital source of support and inspiration to the legislators who built Canada into one of the world’s leading democracies.
The historical and cultural value of this institution has been masterfully captured by the Mint on a coin which is sure to evoke Canadian pride for generations to come.”
