New Zealand Post has celebrated the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve with release of a 2017 40 mm, one ounce .999 fine silver New Zealand dollar struck by Helvetic Mint.
The colorized reverse of the coin shows the Aurora Australis playing behind the stone Church of the Good Shepherd on the shores of the Mackenzie Basin’s Lake Tekapo.
Holographic foiling has been used to replicate the effect of the Southern Lights on the coin. Designer is Jonathon Gray. Mintage is 1,500.
