Welcome to the new Tiffany Art series – Metropolis. Designed to feature famous urban landscapes the new Metropolis Tiffany Art series begins with a city on almost all travelers want lists: Paris, France. The high degree of detail in this city scape is quite stunning and the blue and turquoise Tiffany glass are perfect choices for the river Seine dividing Paris.
While the extensive detail of the reverse is amazing, the obverse design of these coins is equally pleasing. Featuring the Pond Alexandre III built in 1900, and providing an exceptionally high relief, this side of the coin also identifies the issuing nation of Palau. National arms and denomination is set alongside the city name of Paris, below which we see my favorite French phrase, je t’aime.
Both the $20 three ounce silver and $50 kilo silver Metropolis – Paris proof coins are stuck for release from Palau. The $20 is 55 millimeter in diameter, .999 fine silver and struck to a mintage of 999 pieces. The $50 coin bears the same characteristics, but is 120 millimeter in diameter and has a mintage limit of 99 pieces.
Keep in mind that previous Tiffany Art series have always sold out and risen in value. Part of the reason for this is their beauty, but it also is a great endorsement that so many have won prestigious Coin of the Year Awards.
In scanning through the initial retail offerings I’m seeing a wide range in prices from a low of about $600 to nearly $900 for the 3 ounce silver type, with good availability as of this writing. You can still find the kilo silver coin as well and their prices are in a much tighter range from about $7,000 to nearly $7,750 at the moment.
As the series progresses we will be treated to an array of urban landscapes exhibiting the greatest detail that smartminting® technology has to offer. If the past is any measure, I suspect that we might also see new technological developments with each issue in the series.
