Mr. Hermann spent most of his life in the nation’s capital, serving in the armed forces and building a career as an accounting specialist and financial analyst in various governmental agencies, pursuing the development of the centralized medical records system still used today in the health care industry. The National Capital region provided a rich and constant source of history and inspiration. He frequently visited the Smithsonian’s National Numismatic Collection and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. He enjoyed the inspiring collection and the close-up view of paper money and coins being created.

Mr. Hermann set out to acquire coins slowly and with great care, choosing them for their historical background, artistic beauty, rarity, and value as a safe-haven investment. His goal was to collect complete groups of various coins from specific mints.

For 60 years, he was a steady and frequent patron of national and international numismatic dealers, professional organizations, auctions, and coin shows. He believed that while someone could acquire coins, they were never truly “owned” by the collector. Rather, they remain in the hands of a guardian for a time, and then go on to other safekeepers throughout history. Stack’s Bowers Galleries is honored to present this portion of the G.L. Hermann Collection to the next generation of guardians as part of their June 2025 Showcase Auction.
