The Countdown to 250 Begins Now—Special Announcement
The U.S. Mint begins the countdown to America’s 250th with bold new coin designs and a special 2026 set pairing a gold Mercury dime and a silver medal.
On Independence Day, the United States Mint began the official countdown to the 250th Anniversary of the United States. In 2026, the United States will mark 250 years of independence—and for one year only—our Nation’s circulating coins will feature bold designs to celebrate this historic milestone. Each coin will tell a piece of America’s story—its people, ideals, and journey. This limited-year redesign honors the past while inspiring the future, capturing the spirit of a nation still in the making. Currently, the Mint is working closely with the Secretary of the Treasury to finalize these designs, which will be shared with the public later this year.
In addition to releasing newly designed circulating coins in 2026, the Mint will also release a one-year only Best of the Mint coin collection that reflects the rich numismatic history of the United States. Today, as we commemorate the birth of American independence, we proudly debut the first Best of the Mint coin and medal set to be released in 2026.
Adolph Weinman’s classic design, showing Lady Liberty in a winged cap (symbolizing freedom of thought), debuted in 1916 and retired in 1945. Often referred to as the Winged Liberty Head dime, the Mercury dime served American commerce through the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and two world wars.
Crafted in 1/10 oz 99.99% fine gold, the 2026 reissue will be paired with a companion silver medal featuring an all-new, modern design inspired by elements from the original 1916 Mercury Dime design.
