Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ June Showcase Auction Exceeds Expectations, Realizing Over $6.3 Million

Collector Demand Results in Strong Bidding Across All Areas.

Costa Mesa, CA – Stack’s Bowers Galleries, America’s oldest and most accomplished numismatic auctioneer, is pleased to report its June 2025 Showcase Auction realized $6,330,857, well exceeding presale estimates. Strong bidding was seen throughout the sessions, with gold coins attracting the highest bids. A lovely 1826/6 quarter eagle, graded MS-61 by PCGS and endorsed by both CAC and CMQ, realized $132,000, a record for the grade and the second highest auction price ever realized for the issue.

“We saw strong participation across all areas from the moment the sale opened for online bidding,” said Brian Kendrella, President of Stack’s Bowers Galleries. “The demand for rare and collectible coins, medals, and tokens remains strong and many record prices were achieved.”

The first session showcased medals, tokens, and colonial and federal coins through the twenty-cent piece. Lot 1008, a very rare de Fleury at Stony Point original medal in bronze, brought $28,800. An undated gold medalet of Ulysses S. Grant, reportedly one of only two produced, realized $10,800 in lot 1029. Lots 1034  and 1035, two Pioneer Baseball Club medals, led off The Claremont Collection of Bolen Medals and Tokens, an extensive and high-quality selection that brought out the specialists. Each Pioneer Baseball Club medal realized $6,600, while a MS-65 (PCGS) silver 1920 “Wilson Dollar” in lot 1169 set a world record for the issue in silver at $10,800, far exceeding any previously published price. An extensive selection of rare Civil War and Sutler tokens rounded out the Numismatic Americana offerings with lot 1275, a 119th United States Colored Infantry 10 Cents token, realizing $5,760.

Federal issues in Session 1 that brought notable prices included:

Lot 1311:  1820 Matron Head Cent. N-15. Rarity-2. Small Date. MS-65 RB (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. Ex Newcomb-Starr-Nicolas-Koshkarian. One of the finest N-15s known. Realized $11,400.

Lot 1322: 1858 Flying Eagle Cent. Large Letters, High Leaves (Style of 1857), Type I. MS-65 (PCGS). From the J. Francis Abacus Collection. Realized $12,000.

Lot 1341: 1869 Indian Cent. MS-66 RD (CACG). Realized $22,800.

Lot 19351969-S Lincoln Cent. FS-101. Doubled Die Obverse. MS-63 RB (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. Realized $43,200.

Lot 1422: 1873 Shield Nickel. Open 3. MS-67 (PCGS). Realized a record price of $15,600.

Lot 1438: 1916-S Buffalo Nickel. MS-66+ (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. Realized $13,200.

Lot 1478: 1851-O Liberty Seated Dime. Fortin-101. Rarity-3. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. Realized a record price of $26,400.

Lot 1502: 1940 Mercury Dime. Proof-68+ (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. Realized a record price for the issue at $16,800.

Session Two began with the NorthEast Collection of Bust Quarters. Two AU-58 1806 B-3 quarters each realized $9,000: lot 2013, a PCGS graded coin and lot 2014, an NGC graded, CAC approved piece. An ultra-rare 1806 B-8 with reverse cud in lot 2023, graded VG-10 (PCGS) CAC, realized $13,200, while a VG-8 example of the 1822 25/50C reverse in lot 2044 brought $6,300.

Among other silver coins, a 1900-O Type I/II Barber quarter in MS-67 (PCGS), offered in lot 2104, attracted a record price for the grade at $16,800. In lot 2164, a magnificent 1917-D Obverse Mintmark half dollar graded MS-65+ and approved by CAC and CMQ brought $22,800, while an 1893-S Morgan dollar graded AU-55 (NGC) CMQ in lot 2262 sold for $50,400.

Besides the 1826/6 quarter eagle in lot 2315 that realized $132,000, other gold highlights included lot 2353, an 1804 BD-1 half eagle graded AU-58+ by PCGS and approved by both CAC and CMQ that brought $26,400 and a MS-62+ (PCGS) CAC. CMQ 1814 BD-1 half eagle that sold for $42,000 in lot 2358. Additional standout prices from Session 2 included:

Lot 2141: 1867 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Proof-67 (CACG). Realized $20,400.

Lot 2213: 1873-CC Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. OC-1. Rarity-4+. VF Details--Cleaned (PCGS). Realized $21,600.

Lot 2215: 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar. 8 Tailfeathers. MS-66 PL (CACG). CMQ. Realized $16,800.

Lot 2282: 1901-S Morgan Silver Dollar. MS-65+ * DPL (NGC). Realized $31,200.

Lot 2370: 1864 Liberty Head Half Eagle. AU-55 (PCGS). Realized $20,400.
