The final installment of the remarkable “Eldorado Collection of the Paper Money of Colombia” is to be offered as part of Stack’s Bowers’ contribution to the American Numismatic Association’s World Fair of Money in August.
The collection was 50 years in the making. Its aim was to achieve the finest and most complete collection of Colombian coins and currency ever assembled. The first part of the collection crossed the block in January this year. That sale saw many records shattered.
Not all the rarities nor those hard-to-find-but-worth-the-effort pieces went in that first sale. A detailed browse of this second catalog will offer many a treat for all collectors of South American paper as well as those who specialize in specimen notes. These abound in the catalog along with high-grade regular circulation issues.
Among desirable items seeking a new and caring home is a Colombian Banco de la República 500 pesos oro, P-411a, dated 1 January 1968. A not uncommon note, perhaps, but this one carries serial 00000003. No doubt its eventual price realized will be helped by its PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58 EPQ grade. It will be a trophy in any collection.
However, if that item should prove too mundane, how about a Banco Nacional 1000 pesos specimen of 1895, P-241s, in Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ?
Or, possibly of even greater interest, a Banco de la República 500 pesos oro specimen of 1923, P-367s? As an issued note, this is rarely seen in high grade, and this example comes graded Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.
And no sale of Colombian notes would be complete without at least one historic example showing a vignette of Columbus. He is well represented in this sale on a Banco de Colombia 100 pesos specimen of 15 December 1881, P-S388s. It shows the intrepid navigator landing in the New World. By the way, it just happens to come graded PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
At the time of writing, the date of sale had not been finalized. It is likely to be either Tuesday, Aug. 14, and/or Thursday, Aug. 16.
