Poll Question: If you had $10,000 to spend on one coin, which coin would it be and why?

From the September 5, 2025, Numismatic News e-Newsletter, respondents share which single coin they’d choose if they had $10,000 to spend.

The 1933 Saint-Gaudens double eagle, no explanation needed!

I'd probably go for an 1802 half dime. I've been working on a half dime set for a few years now, and those early dates are tough to just find.

If I had $10,000 to spend on any one coin, I believe it would have to be a 1916D Mercury head dime. It's the only one I don't have to complete my collection.

That’s tough because there are so many coins I would love to buy, but they are a bit pricey. If I had 10K to spend it would be a mint state 1877 Indian head penny in red/brown or full red. Other than the 1856 flying eagle cent, this is the only other coin I need to complete the Indian head penny collection in mint state.

I also need the 1916 standing liberty quarter, but I might not be able to get a nice mint state coin for 10K. The other coin I would buy is a nice proof 67 cameo seated dollar.

I would buy an 1861 $3 gold piece in the best condition $10,000 will buy.  I put together a "complete" mint set from 100 years before I was born and convinced myself that the $3 piece was not a regular issue.  With fewer than 6000 made, any grade was beyond my reach.

I would spend it on a rare Morgan Silver Dollar.

$10,000? I would buy the finest 1916 standing liberty quarter I could get. I would look at it for several days before it went in my safe.

I would put it toward a 1893-S Morgan Dollar in XF-40 grade.

Since I’ve been collecting, circa 1960, I’ve always wanted to have a 1909-s vdb, which I’ve yet to get. I’ve also wanted a 1955 double obverse. With $10 k I’d probably fill my boyhood dreams with both coins in the best of mint conditions. But I’m retired, and $10k is quite elusive to someone on a military pension and social security check. Thanks for allowing me to daydream once again.

I wouldn't spend $10,000 on any coin.  I would probably spend it on more than one coin or perhaps travel.
