Final Flight: Cook Islands Steampunk Aviation Coin Concludes Popular Series

The Cook Islands 3-ounce silver “Steampunk Aviation” coin marks the grand finale of CIT’s imaginative Steampunk series, blending Victorian fantasy with futuristic flight and intricate design.

A propeller plane flies above a city that runs on cogs and gears on the latest coin of CIT’s “Steampunk” series. Issued for the Cook Islands, the 3-ounce .9999 silver “Steampunk Aviation” coin connects air travel with steampunk, a science fiction subgenre that intertwines Victorian aesthetics with retro-futuristic technology.

Much is happening in this coin’s imaginary city: blimps float above buildings and towers as a golden dome shines amongst the antique finish scene. Sharing this airspace is the propeller plane that is flying toward the viewer. Both the fuselage and propeller have seen better days, marked with scuffs and patched together with sheets of metal. Despite its weathered appearance, the propeller stands out in gold along with the cap of the pilot, who sits in the open-air captain’s seat.

This imagery is a send-off of sorts, as it is the sixth and final edition of CIT’s “Steampunk” collection. Other issues in the series highlighted the genre itself and different topics related to and often depicted in steampunk imagery: carnival, science lab, jet pack, and nautilus. The design of the “Aviation” coin pays homage to its peers, with Easter eggs hidden within its design that refer to the other themes.
