On July 29, the coin collecting community lost a well-known and respected collector, D. Brent Pogue. At just 54 years old, Pogue’s death comes as a shock to the hobby. An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death.

Known for having one of the best modern collections of high-quality early United States gold, silver and copper coinage, the collection came to be known as the Pogue Family Collection, as Brent collected with his father, Mack.

Stack’s Bowers Galleries sold the Pogue Family Collection in a series of five parts from May 2015 through March 2017. The five auctions combined realized $108,204,820. Notable coins in the collection included two 1804 Draped Bust dollar coins, one previously owned by the Sultan of Muscat, an 1822 Capped Head gold $5, the only known held in private hands, among others.
