Did you receive any coins or hobby items as holiday gifts? If so, what?

Received a copy of nice 1-ounce silver Kangaroos for Christmas.

I received an 1818 quarter, NGC VG-10.

I bought a couple of Morgans and a few Eagles!

I did not receive any numismatic material for Christmas. Bummer!

I received a “Red Book” for Christmas.

Nope! Not a one. Realistically, that is almost an impossible task for a non-collector to purchase a specific coin for a numismatist.

Yes I did! An 1982-D small date Bronze penny.

1899 $5 Silver Certificate Indian chief.

Rather than answer for my selfish self, our local Fairfield Coin Club and Vallejo Numismatic Society held Dec. 4 their famous, and infamous, Joint Christmas Party with Kimberly S. Kiick, American Numismatic Association executive director.

At this party, everyone, as an early holiday gift, was given a proof copper medal, a CU $1 Star Note and a goodie bag filled and heavy with coins, treats and even used stamps, all these making every attendee “a winner.”

Yet, the best were gifts bestowed upon James E. Kern, the retiring executive director of the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, in appreciation and respect for his kind support toward the annual party and local organized numismatics. Jim, as he is well-known, collects elongateds.

The Joint Party and a generous benefactor presented him heavy bags packed with elongateds plus the rare and always-sought first elongates from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition as well as Dottie Dow’s monumental reference. Certainly an outstanding holiday, and retirement, gift and presentation to someone who has a passion for elongateds as well as being a friend for local numismatics.
