Coin of the Year Kicks Off for 2026
The 2026 Coin of the Year competition is officially underway, beginning with the global call for nominations that will shape the COTY 100.
The new year always brings about excitement for future content, and projects are taken on with renewed energy and excitement. The start of a new year also begins the next Coin of the Year (COTY) competition.
Those who follow the program may be surprised at how early it truly begins. On Monday, January 5, the 2026 COTY season officially began with a call for nominations. Typically, the first news many people hear about the program is the announcement of the COTY 100, where ten coins for each of the ten categories have been chosen.
However, everyone knows that there are far more than just 100 coins produced every year, so how does the COTY 100 get chosen? It all starts with the initial Call for Nominations sent to mints, banks, and other issuing entities. Submission forms are then sent to the COTY team from around the world, resulting in 500 – 600 nominated coins. From there, the Nominating Committee, a small group of international members, meets and discusses each coin to decide the COTY 100.
