Mint Stats: Buyers nab 1,499 Buffalo proofs
Sales of the 2012 proof Buffalo 1-ounce gold piece rose by 1,499 coins to reach 7,189. If it can keep up that pace, it would equal the 2011 sales number in 13 weeks, but it will not. Collectors tend to place the bulk of their orders in the opening few weeks of availability. The gold and silver American Eagle proofs will soon crowd out thoughts of proof Buffalo coins.
Star-Spangled Banner commemoratives as the new game in town continue to outsell the Infantry commemoratives. Some 7,476 proof silver dollars were taken by collectors compared to 1,286 Infantry proofs. The uncirculated Star-Spangled Banner dollar registered sales of 2,076 and the uncirculated Infantry came in at 668.
The 2-coin gold $5 and silver dollar Star-Spangled Banner proof set saw sales of 322 compared to just 249 of the individual proof Star-Spangled Banner gold $5 coins.
Buyers of the new Birth set added 1,142 more to the sales total, bringing it to 8,315. The set features various proof coins, including the El Yunque National Forest quarter. The quarter will not change as other ATB designs are issued this year.
