Was there any evidence of end-of-year cherry-picking of new issues going off sale that might prove to be scarce? Indeed there was. The National Park Service commemoratives saw interest in two pieces. Sales of the uncirculated gold $5 jumped by 739 to reach a final sales number of 5,198. That is almost a 17 percent increase. The uncirculated clad half dollar also saw a last-minute spurt in purchases. Buyers grabbed 1,680 more coins to bring the final number to 21,328. That is an almost nine percent increase.
Some numbers went backwards. The gold Mercury dime decreased by 16 to 124,899. The uncirculated “W” collector silver American Eagle went down by 5,736 to 167,066.
Plucky buyers pushed the gold Standing Liberty quarter up by 1,092 to 86,798. The gold Walking Liberty half went up by 1,023 to 60,012.
The January silver and gold bullion numbers, as well as the end-of-2016 numbers, appear below.
