Mint Stats: Commems fall short in 2011
By: Maggie Pahl
It’s out with the old and in with the new as a new product year takes hold at the U.S. Mint.
The 2011 commemorative coins were far off the mark in meeting maximum mintages, which is not only a blow to the Mint’s sales bottom line, but to the programs their surcharges were aimed to benefit. The big question is whether sales of 2012 commemorative coins will do any better. Or are collectors overwhelmed with all of the collecting options in front of them? You can track that trend on these pages in the coming months.
The Mint is off and running with its 2012 collector offerings, starting with the 2012 America the Beautiful quarters silver proof set that went on sale Jan. 10.
Look for the 2011 ATB Vicksburg National Military Park 5-ounce silver Unc. coin, the 2012 ATB quarter proof set and ATB El Yunque National Forest quarter bags and two-roll sets to become available in January as well.
And let the 2012 collecting year begin.
