Mint Stats: Collector interest focuses on gold ounce

This week it was the one-ounce 2013-W proof gold American Eagle coin’s turn to experience a jump in sales.

This week it was the one-ounce 2013-W proof gold American Eagle coin’s turn to experience a jump in sales. The Mint recorded an increase of 1,020 coins to bring the running sales total to 15,280 so far this year. That is approximately a 7 percent jump in one week. Last week it was the uncirculated gold Eagle ounce that recorded a 1,035-coin sales jump. This week sales backed off to 331 pieces.

Don’t forget, uncirculated Eagle coins in Mint parlance are mintmarked coins sold directly to collectors. They are not the much more numerous bullion coins that have no mintmarks on them.

Proof gold Buffalo sales advanced by an even stronger 646 coins this week compared to last week’s 554. The running sales total has just passed the 17,000 mark.

Added interest in one-ounce gold coins is not spilling over into the fractional sizes. The proof half-ounce gold Eagle saw sales this week of 83 pieces, while the quarter ounce was 111 and the tenth ounce 312. Four-coin Eagle set buyers took only 180 more of those.
