That will be followed by the Five-Star Generals commemorative coins that go on sale March 21. The coins honor the United States Army Command and General Staff College, which was established in 1881.

Support for commemorative coins have taken a hit lately. The 2012 commemorative coins didn’t come close to selling out their maximum mintage. The 2012 Infantry Soldier silver dollar total sales came to a little over 157,500, with a maximum mintage of 350,000. The Star Spangled Banner silver $1 coin recorded almost the same number of sales, a bit over 159,000, on a maximum mintage of 500,000.

So is the public losing interest in commemorative coins, or are the subjects not of interest to enough people?
