Here’s something you don’t see every day. Collectors bought nearly as many proof 2012-W silver American Eagle coins as investors purchased the standard one-ounce bullion coin version this week.

The respective numbers are 299,539 for the proofs and a 320,000 increase in the weekly bullion coin numbers.

Sales of the proofs opened April 12 and the total reflects just four days of results. The number of proof 2011 coins sold individually was 850,000. Last year saw another 100,000 proofs incorporated in the 25th anniversary set. This year will see additional “S” proofs packaged with a reverse proof to honor the 75th anniversary of the current San Francisco Mint. Production of these sets begins in May.

Who loves Chester Arthur? Buyers of his Presidential dollars seem to. Sales of the 25-coin rolls already exceed those of the other Presidents since Lincoln. You throw in the large quantities of 250-coin boxes and the 500-coin boxes and it looks like the Mint has run out or will have to make more of these coins. Mint Stats: Silver Eagle Totals Rising Again

For the first time in a couple of weeks, uncirculated 2011-W silver American Eagle collector coin sales rose. The total was up by 8,827 to reach 190,927. The wave of cancelled orders due to the cut in its price has apparently finished washing over these numbers. The total is still fewer than the 194,000 registered in the Sept. 26 Mint report.

Bullion silver American Eagles have recorded a final 2012 total of 33,742,500. This number is down 6,126,000 coins from the 2011 total. In percentage terms the decline is 15.37 percent.

Mint Stats: Silver Eagles up at month end

Check the running annual sales totals for American Eagle and Buffalo bullion coins in the right-most column. This week’s numbers jumped by more than the numbers indicated by the September monthly box at the bottom of this page because of additional sales made in the final two days of August. These end-of-month numbers were substantial for the one-ounce silver Eagle where another 1,415,000 coins were sold in addition to the 175,000 at the beginning of September. This brings the running annual total to 29,126,000 coins.

Mint Stats: Buyers nab 1,499 Buffalo proofs

Sales of the 2012 proof Buffalo 1-ounce gold piece rose by 1,499 coins to reach 7,189. If it can keep up that pace, it would equal the 2011 sales number in 13 weeks, but it will not. Collectors tend to place the bulk of their orders in the opening few weeks of availability.
