Gold American Eagle bullion coins came alive this week. Suddenly, 28,000 one-ounce coins have been sold with smaller numbers of the fractional sizes. This makes December the second busiest sales month of 2017 for the ouncers. Only the January sales numbers beat it. Big coins go to investors, so they must sense a bargain basement gold price.
Silver sales also jumped by 622,000 pieces in just a week. This doesn’t vault December results ahead of all other months, but it does end the race to see how low sales can fall. Still, there are only two other months with lower silver Eagle sales.
Clad proof sets are still hot. Buyers took 17,705 more since last week. With sales of 522,521 sets so far this year, the tally is still behind that of 2016, but the gap is now less than 73,000 sets.
Room has been made for the George Rogers Clark 5-ounce silver coins.
