Apparently record gold prices and a pending price hike energized buyers of the proof gold American Eagle coins.

Strong demand continued for the four-coin set. Sales jumped 5,233 to 22,657 in the past week, but it was the half ounce that really came alive. Buyers snapped up 1,695 of them to raise the running total by 42 percent to 5,697.
The quarter ounce continued higher by 561 to bring total sales to 4,974. Sales of tenth-ounce coins rose by 1,622 to 12,033.
Milestones were passed by the American Eagle bullion coins this week. The silver version passed the 30-million mark, both a nice round number and a record since the program began. Last year sales were 28,766,500. The one-ounce gold American Eagle passed the million mark, but this is still below last year’s sales figure of 1,315,500.
Disabled Vets proof silver dollars saw sales jump by 1,995, so there is some added interest before the program ends.
