Are you a dog person or a cat person? Everyone has been asked this age-old question at least a dozen times. According to Forbes, 66 percent of U.S. households own a pet—44.5 percent own dogs, and only 29 percent own cats.

Dogs often get picked over cats because they tend to be more social and easier to train, compared to cats' more aloof manner, but those who have cats in their lives can attest that they can be just as lovable with a range of personalities.

This year, the Czech Mint released the first coins in their new Cat Breeds series, starting with the British Shorthair, released in March. Since then, there has been the Maine Coon, the Siamese, and now the Persian. The series will have a total of twelve cats, and the last coin will be released in September 2026.

The Niue one-dollar (NZD) silver coins include a colored depiction of the cat and a second in relief playing in the background. The obverse, which is common throughout the series, features a stylized cat and the emblem of Niue.

These furry friends are ready to play into your collection. Perhaps you’ll find one that looks like your very own.
