The American Innovation dollar for the state of Louisiana, the second to be issued in 2023, was set to be released in rolls and bags on April 10.

The U.S. Mint’s American Innovation program is a multi-year series honoring innovation and innovators with $1 coins from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands and Northern Mariana Islands.

The dollar coin honoring Louisiana recognizes the invention of the Higgins Boat. The Landing Craft, Vehicle and Personnel (LCVP), or Higgins Boat, is credited with helping the Allies win World War II. The boat gets its name from Andrew Jackson Higgins, who designed it. It was flat-bottomed with a ramp at the front. With the ability to maneuver in only 10 inches of water, the Higgins Boat allowed for military personnel, equipment and small vehicles to easily unload onto an open beach through the landing ramp.

The coin’s reverse design depicts a Higgins Boat as it would have been deployed during World War II with its innovative landing ramp open against a beach. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES of AMERICA,” “THE HIGGINS BOAT” and “LOUISIANA.”

The obverse design features a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty in profile with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1.” It also includes a privy mark of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation. The year of minting, mintmark and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are incused on the edge of the coin.
