The official release date of bags and rolls of the American Women quarter honoring entertainer Anna May Wong is Oct. 25, but there is a good chance that the products will already be spoken for by then.
According to the product page on the U.S. Mint’s website, “Because of overwhelming demand, much of the production of the 100-coin bags and two- and three-roll sets are accounted for through enrollments.” The enrollment program allows buyers to claim a product prior to its on-sale date.
The Wong quarter is the fifth coin released in the American Women quarters program, a four-year series celebrating the accomplishments and contributions made by prominent women of the United States. From 2022 through 2025, the Mint will issue five new quarters each year featuring reverse designs honoring each prominent American woman.
Wong left a lasting legacy for Asian American women in the entertainment industry. Her career spanned motion pictures, television and theatre. She appeared in more than 60 movies, including silent films and one of the first made in Technicolor. She also appeared in productions on the London and New York stages. Throughout her career, she championed the need for increased representation and more multi-dimensional roles for Asian American actors. Wong was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
She is remembered as an international film star, fashion icon, television trailblazer and a champion for greater representation of Asian Americans in film. She continues to inspire actors and filmmakers today.
The quarter’s reverse design depicts a close-up image of Wong with her head resting on her hand, surrounded by the bright lights of a marquee sign. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “QUARTER DOLLAR” and “ANNA MAY WONG.”
The common obverse depicts a portrait of George Washington originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate entry for the 1932 quarter, which honored the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “2022.”
While there are no mintage limits on the quarter itself, product limits are in place. These include 1,860 for bags, 5,940 for the two-roll set (one “P” roll and one “D” roll) and 7,620 for the three-roll set that is comprised of one roll each of “P,” “D” and “S” quarters.
