Poll Question: If coins could be made out of any material, what would be the coolest to see? Why?

From the February 27, 2026, Numismatic News e-Newsletter, readers imagined coins struck from everything from meteorites to ceramics.

I think the coolest material to mint a coin from, and very expensive... Probably, would be certifiable meteoric material.

Titanium, because it is strong, it is lightweight, it is anti-corrosive, and antimicrobial. It would be a great material to use. It looks like a derivative of silver shade.

I'll limit my answer to one coin and two metal combinations. It would have been two coins, but we don't have to worry about the Lincoln cent anymore because its inclusion in mint and proof sets only will guarantee positive seignorage. The composition of the money-losing Jefferson nickel needs to be changed to either 1) zinc-coated low-grade steel, a la the 1943 cent, or 2) aluminum, as many nations are doing or have done with some of their circulating coins. I have a few well-worn Israeli 1 agarot coins from the 1960s. Aluminum. They kept their shape and design elements.

As of now, all numismatic coins, all paper money, and all circulating coins except the nickel earn this country a tidy sum. This way, the D.C. bean counters need not have their knickers in a twist any longer over the single coin that doesn't.

I think it would be really cool to see coins made from gemstones. Rubies, emeralds, sapphires, diamonds. Precious gemstones have a solid value to back them, and I think it could look neat to see them with a design engraved on them.

I would like to see some ceramic commemorative coins.
