Highway Heist of the Tiniest Kind: 8 Million Dimes Blanket Texas Road After Truck Overturns
Move over gold rush—Texas just had a dime spill of epic proportions.
Early Tuesday morning near Alvord High School, an 18-wheeler hauling roughly $800,000 in freshly minted dimes toppled onto its side, transforming U.S. 81/Highway 287 into what can only be described as a change hoarder's fever dream (and a street sweeper’s worst nightmare).
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the driver veered off the road and overcorrected around 5:30 a.m., causing the rig to flip and unleash an estimated 8 million dimes onto the pavement and surrounding grass like a pocket explosion of biblical proportions.
Crews spent nearly 14 hours scooping, sweeping, and vacuuming up the scattered silver sea. Some were armed with shovels, others with street sweepers—and one man admitted to almost bringing a bucket.
Thankfully, although the driver and a passenger were injured, they were in stable condition. No hazardous materials were involved—unless you count slipping on 10-cent pieces at 60 miles an hour. One thing’s for sure: this dime drop turned a routine Tuesday into a very change-filled day in Wise County.
