Are American gold coins now a good buy?

Here are some answers sent from our e-newsletter readers to Editor Dave Harper.

In my opinion the answer to this question will depend on an individual’s preferences. If you have the budget and enjoy the designs, then it is a good time. Gold has gone down a bit in price, so buy if you can! If it was my choice it would not be a good time simply because I don’t have the budget and also because I would want to buy foreign gold coins first.

Gold is always a good buy. But above $1,500 per ounce, it may be too expensive.

I think American gold is a good buy in today’s market. Every one should own at least 10 percent of their investment portfolio in gold. There is no sense in waiting for the price of gold to drop. There is no guarantee it will. In contrast, I also find foreign gold to be a better value.

Yes I believe numismatic mold coins are a very good buy, especially once again as we see government unable to even slow the pace of spending. Gold coins have a very reasonable, historically low, premium right now over the value of the gold content. The debt is sure to rise, inflation is there, no matter what the idiots in Washington say, so sooner or later, we will pay for the waste and out-of-control devaluation of all world currencies. Sad, but true to anyone who peeks under the tent flap and has some common sense about the government owing more than $20 trillion. Gold coins are a bargain in my opinion.

Yes, I suspect it is and I wait until I see what the daily market does. I am currently looking for several. However, I have learned in the past that many coin businesses do not display too many gold coins. I guess it is fear of robbery.

I have supported our local stores, but I also go to the major shows located around the nation. I enjoy the hunt and variety. OK to buy when the price is right, but do your own research before buying.

Above all, buy from trusted dealers and assure yourself that the gold is genuine.
