Mint Stats: What do you make of ‘S’ set?
Collector demand for the two-coin silver American Eagle “S” proof set slowed dramatically this week. Buyers grabbed just 21,619 additional sets, bringing the running total on the Mint’s sales odometer to 136,678. I would expect orders could tail off further next week, but then finish big in the final days of availability. What will the July 5 final order number be? 200,000? It is beginning to look possible.
Should the Mint offer some products for just one week and then cut off orders? I sometimes think so. Consider last week’s sales number for the silver 2012 proof set was 189,628. This week just another 14,026 were added. Talk about front-end loaded.
El Yunque 5-ounce silver coins raise a question. Collectors have purchased 9,639 coins while bullion buyers have taken 9,700. Does that near tie mean only collectors are buying the bullion coins? Could be.
The four-coin 2011 proof gold set saw 12 more sell to bring the total to 18,205. That’s one fewer than was sold last week.
Collectors might not be fond of one-coin “sets.” The Bicentennial Dollar Set had sales of 1,484, to bring the running total to 15,093.
Neither figure is strong.
