Mint Stats: Small spurt in proof Eagle sales

There was surprising life in the one-ounce gold American Eagle proof number this week. It rose by 2,023. The other sales options just slogged along slowly. Collectors took only 78 of the half-ounce proofs in the past week while they purchased 120 of the quarter-ounce and 319 of the tenth-ounce pieces. The full set saw sales of an additional 441. None of these results looks like a house on fire, but the one-ounce piece has reached the halfway mark in terms of the maximum number that will be available.

After an initial 7,500 in sales reported last week, just 762 more of the 2011 proof Buffalo gold coins were taken by collectors. The uncirculated version, which has been available longer, rose by 435 pieces, but sits at only 2,260.

Bullion coin numbers rose slightly but not a full week of data is available because of the Memorial Day holiday.

The platinum 2011 one-ounce proof went on the board at 6,786, almost as many as the proof Buffalo’s start.

There were no fireworks in this week’s numbers. Some totals crept ahead by such small amounts that it appears many would-be buyers decided to go off on summer vacation. For example, the uncirculated Army $5 gold piece moved ahead by 11 while the proof advanced by 81. The Medal of Honor commemoratives increased by somewhat larger amounts.

Coin collectors were in a buying mood this week for proof Eagles. Sales of the 2011 silver proof American Eagle vaulted higher by 133,420 while the one-ounce gold proof American Eagle jumped by 4,514. Buyers also seemed to have developed a new fondness for the 9/11 medals. The West Point version saw sales of 9,830 this week, pushing the cumulative total up by almost 24 percent to 51,289.

The sellout magic very obviously has departed from the America the Beautiful 5-ounce program. Sales of the 2011-P uncirculated collector versions of the Gettysburg and Glacier coins are just crawling along. The three 2011 bullion coins still available saw no additional sales at all this week.

Holiday demand for annual sets produced by the U.S. Mint seems to be kicking in this week. Sales of the clad 2011 proof set rose by 16,545 to reach 933,011. The silver proof set moved ahead by 5,789 to 493,708.

I expect you noticed that last week’s edition did not have the Mint Statistics column in it. Sorry. It could not be helped. I did not receive sales figures from the Mint before the Sept. 6 issue went to press. The 2010 Grand Canyon 5-ounce uncirculated America the Beautiful silver coin looks like a sellout. I expect the 27,154 number will be massaged back to 27,000 shortly as the Mint works through canceled and problem orders.

Collectors can sometimes be very predictable. This week, the first sales total for the 2011-W uncirculated collector silver American Eagle goes in its place further down on this page. The 184,967 pieces sold since it went on sale Sept. 15 seems to be on the strong side until you compare it to the first sales of the proof version. Demand for the uncirculated coin is running at approximately half the rate recorded by the proof in its first few days after it went on sale June 30. That’s a standard collector demand pattern when there are no special factors distorting basic preferences.

Sales of the 2012 proof Buffalo 1-ounce gold piece rose by 1,499 coins to reach 7,189. If it can keep up that pace, it would equal the 2011 sales number in 13 weeks, but it will not. Collectors tend to place the bulk of their orders in the opening few weeks of availability.

Are buyers losing interest in the proof 2011 silver American Eagle? Only 52,050 more were taken in the latest week, bringing the ongoing tally to 460,041. To equal last year’s sum, the Mint needs to move another 400,000 coins. Will it do it? Perhaps some big buyers will help it out. Sales limits were lifted July 15. Now you can purchase any quantity you have the cash to pay for.
