June is well under way as you read this and the Mint is now getting going with the first 2012 America the Beautiful 5-ounce program. The first numbers for El Yunque went on the charts below. Buyer response is a far cry from the heady days when everybody wanted all 33,000 of the 2010 bullion coins and 27,000 of the collector “P” uncirculated versions. As you can see, the maximum collector numbers have been scaled back to 25,000 from 35,000. Current sales numbers for the 2011 coins make it look like 25,000 maximums for 2012 will be ample. Interestingly, bullion buyers and collectors took virtually identical amounts of the El Yunque coins at 6,200 and 6,514, respectively.

Sales of the four-coin 2011 gold American Eagle set rose by 18 to reach 18,180. Buyers snared 9,527 more 2012 proof silver American Eagles, taking the running total to 404,985.

Additional sales of 2012 uncirculated and proof sets were virtually identical this week at 13,668 and 13,241, respectively. The uncirculated set doesn’t outsell the proof in the long run, but this is the early days of the set’s availability.
