Fractional gold sales take dive

Sales of the fractional gold American Eagle coins fell dramatically from June to July and there was no action at all in the first couple of days of August.

Sales of the fractional gold American Eagle coins fell dramatically from June to July and there was no action at all in the first couple of days of August.

Where the Mint sold 31,000 half-ounce coins in June, the total for July was 2,000. Where 44,000 of the quarter ounce coins sold in June, just 2,000 sold in July. For the tenth ounce, 280,000 were sold in June and just 30,000 in July.

The one-ounce gold Eagle coin, on the other hand, saw sales of 147,500, the second highest monthly total of 2010.

Silver Eagle sales opened at 275,000 in August, bringing the ongoing total to over 21 million for the year.

Buffalo proofs moved ahead slowly.

On the other hand, the 2010 proof set sales total grew by 54,637 to 351,016. This outpaced sales of the standard uncirculated coin set, which registered 22,778 additional sets sold.
