The Mint’s year-end effort to promote Bald Eagle commemoratives is not having much effect yet on the sales totals. The proof $1 actually went backwards this week.
The case of the Defenders of Freedom Set not selling out its 50,000 maximum took a curious turn this week. The number of sets sold was reduced by 2,709 to 43,727.
Last week’s news that the Mint is no longer rationing its supply of gold American Eagle coins, but that rationing continues for silver might help explain why gold sales went up 16,000 coins this week and silver sales didn’t. The Mint simply had some gold coins to sell.
The Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set arrives this week with a sellout number of 51,000. That’s 1,000 over the maximum allowed, but not to worry. That will be whittled back to the 50,000 by the time all credit card and other problems are worked through.
Sales of silver bullion American Eagles passed the 10-million mark. With the first quarter of the year nearly finished, it makes a handy point to stop and consider how many coins might be sold this year. Resist the temptation to simply multiply the number by four to reach 40 million.
